You have arrived at the Canadian SF Works Database, a collaborative storehouse of knowledge about the world of professional Canadian science fiction and fantasy writing, publishing, and art founded June 6, 2007, by Marcel Gagné and Robert J. Sawyer, who continue to administer the site.
Why did we create this? Every year, usually at awards time, a few people scramble madly to assemble lists of the works published in the previous year. These lists help determine works that are eligible for those awards. Sometimes the lists are reasonably complete and accurate, sometimes they aren't, and sometimes they are just plain unavailable thereby leaving your favourite SF story in no-award purgatory. Oh, the humanity! Who knows what to do? Who can help?
You do and you can! Here's how: Register, log in, and help us build a comprehensive list of Canadian science fiction and fantasy fiction and art published each year.
The 2011 Aurora Awards were presented at the 31st annual Canadian National Science Fiction Convention, SFContario 2, in Toronto, on November 20, 2011. The winners were:
By far the largest cash prize ever for a Canadian science-fiction and fantasy award -- and one of the largest cash prizes in the world for either genre -- has been endowed by HarperCollins Canada to honour the memory of Monica Hughes. The Canadian Children's Book Centre will bestow the annual juried Monica Hughes Award.
Here's the press release:
You'll find the final ballot and voting instructions here.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Being listed here does NOT constitute a nomination for any award; this is merely a database of works eligible for nomination. Until the official awards administrators release a final voting ballot, no one is a nominee, and ONLY works listed on a final ballot are nominees.
A few days ago, I was on the site and noticed an old post about Don Bassie's "Made in Canada" site. I myself have a couple of "I am CanadianSF" t-shirts and therefore remember the site fondly every time I see those shirts (they're actually kids' shirts so my sons wear them). But I digress . . .
Noticing the post meant I kept thinking about it and so a couple of days ago, I took it upon myself to see if I could rescue what might still exist of the site. The result is here at madeincanada.canadiansf.com.
Thanks to Don for his pioneering work in documenting Canadian writers, actors, and more. Enjoy the nostalgia trip!
Robert J. Sawyer's novel Watch (Penguin Canada) just won the Hal Clement Award for Best Young-Adult Science Fiction Novel of 2010; the award will be presented at this year's World Science Fiction Convention in Reno, Nevada, in August.
The other Canadian nominee was Kathy Reichs for Virals.
The Hal Clement Award -- one of the juried Golden Duck Awards honouring excellence in children's science-fiction -- has been given annually since 1992.
Hal Clement was one of the greatest hard-SF writers of all time. He was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and was the author of such classics as Mission of Gravity and Needle. He passed away in 2003.
